Our red bellied woodpecker (melanerpes carolinus) couple, Sonny and Cher, are homebodies compared to the previous generation. So when this "uninvited cousin" a piliated woodpecker, popped by to see if the condo was available, fortunately they were home. Sonny and this guy were pecking at each other for a while!
Pileated woodpeckers (Dryocopus pileatus) are large, mostly black woodpeckers native to North America. They are insectivores that eat cockroaches and termites and all the other buggy things we dont want around us here in Florida, so it would be nice if he could find his own home near us.
