Description
Red Bellied Woodpecker Brings Home The Bread, approaching the nest cavity of this Florida palm tree trunk. We can see the orange around her bill and red cap. Red-bellied Woodpeckers, ((Melanerpes carolinus, are medium-sized woodpeckrs of the family Picidae. These pale, medium-sized woodpeckers are found in the Southeastern USA. The strikingly barred backs and gleaming red caps of these birds are a lovely sight. The male has a bright red cap all the way to the bill, while his lady has a grey head in front of the red area, also with a touch of orange accenting her black beak. Despite the name, the red on the belly is hard to spot!
Woodpeckers are beneficial insect eaters and enjoy significant amount of vegetarian diet-- plant material including acorns, nuts, fruits, seeds. The couple takes turns incubating the white eggs (probably 4) as a team for about 2 weeks,
