Meeting of the Mates; Red Bellied Woodpeckers is a rare moment when both the pretty woodpeckers are at home and posing at the same time like lovebirds! Changing of the guard? Normally they take turns in the nest cavity of this Florida palm tree trunk. The couple both incubate the white eggs (up to 4) as a team for about 2 weeks and then care for the babies together. Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Melanerpes carolinus, are medium-sized woodpeckers of the family Picidae. These pale, medium-sized woodpeckers are found in the Southeastern USA. The strikingly barred backs and gleaming red caps of these birds and the orange around the bill are a lovely sight. The male has a bright red cap all the way to the bill, while his lady has a grey head in front of the red area, also with a touch of orange accenting her black beak. Despite the name, the red on the belly is hard to spot. Woodpeckers are beneficial insect eaters and enjoy significant amount of vegetarian diet-- plant material including acorns, nuts, fruits, seeds.
