"I'm New Here!" This cute young juvenile dove was sitting tamely on a neighborhood hedge as I passed. Perhaps this frazzled fledgling had just fallen from the nest and was too young to have learned to be afraid of me. Fortunately I had my IPhone 7 in my pocket, because when I came back with my camera hoping to get a better shot, I did not see it.
The mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) is the most widely distributed and only native species of dove in Florida. This member of the dove family, Columbidae, is also known as American mourning dove, rain dove, turtle dove, and (formerly) Carolina pigeon and Carolina turtledove. They're abundant and widespread in North America.
