Pink spring flowers accent the view from Ireland’s Cliffs of Moher, once called the best cliff view in the world by Condé Nast Traveller magazine. These beautiful cliffs, located at the southwestern edge of the Burren region in County Clare, Ireland are 700 ft high and stretch for five miles with striking views out into the blue Atlantic to the Aran Islands in Galway Bay, the Maumturks and Twelve Pins mountain ranges to the north in County Galway, and Loop Head to the south. The cliffs are among the most visited tourist sites in Ireland, with about one million visitors a year. The closest settlements are Liscannor to the south and Doolin to the north. The cliffs are primarily beds of Namurian shale and sandstone, with older rocks at the bottom of the cliffs. They are home to about 30,000 birds of 20 species including puffins. In the distance is O'Brien's Tower, a round stone tower built in 1835 by Sir Cornelius O'Brien. I was amazed at the huge tourist infrastructure. When I first visited, long, long ago, I recall there was just a small concrete parking pad.
