Description
One of the world's most beautiful and dramatic rock formations is Coromandel rock. It's on Cathedral Beach at Cathedral Cove, Coromandel Peninsula, Te Whanganui- A-Hei, New Zealand. I love the erosion at the base and trees at the top reminiscent of bonsai. This type of formation can be of ignimbrite, a limestone sea stack, calcite infused mud, or sandstone. A geologist friend says light-colored rock looks like volcanic ash deposited as fall out from an eruption. The pebbles in the light-colored ash are probably pumice. The dark layer on the bottom is an older volcanic rock, maybe an ignimbrite (an ash flow rather than an ash fallout) which tends to be harder because it cements itself when it cools. The weird shape, a hoodoo, is due to a resistant layer over soft rock which is subject to erosion, usually rain; the resistant layer on top appears to be the abundant roots. Who lives here? I would guess a bird or two at top, maybe a basking gecko or skink. At the bottom, possibly clinging mollusks, barnacles. sea squirts, anemones and tube worms, though none posed for a closeup!
