Description
Discussing A Bad Morning shows the pair of red bellied woodpeckers resting together after many incursions by their nemeses, the starlings.
Woodpeckers, Melanerpes carolinus, are medium-sized woodpeckers of the family Picidae. These pale, medium-sized woodpeckers are found in the Southeastern USA. The strikingly barred backs and gleaming red caps of these birds are a lovely sight. The male has a bright red cap all the way to the bill, while his lady has a grey head in front of the red area, also with a touch of orange accenting her black beak. Despite the name, the red on the belly is hard to spot except when he is diving in to relieve Mom guarding the eggs or bringing food to the babies.
Woodpeckers are beneficial insect eaters and enjoy significant amount of vegetarian diet-- plant material inclbuding acorns, nuts, fruits, seeds. The couple takes turns incubating the white eggs (maybe up tp 4) as a team for about 2 weeks, then they both wear themselves out feeding the babies and taking out the trash! And papa still has to chase away rivals!
