Description
This neon signage once shone in Hillcrest, a gay-friendly community of San Diego, California, where this diner operated from late 2013 to October 2014. Harvey Milk was born May 22, 1930, in Woodmere, New York. Harvey and his brother, Robert, worked in the family department store, Milks. His father, William, served in the U.S. Navy and as did his mother Minerva, who was a Yeomanette during World War I. Harvey came from a small middle-class Lithuanian Jewish family that had founded a synagogue. Harvey became a civil and human rights leader and one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. His openly gay candidacy and election gave hope to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender,Queer (LGBTQ) people at a time when the community was encountering widespread hostility and discrimination. His career ended tragically; he was assassinated a year after taking office.

I really like it when a photograph is put into a context. (Real or otherwise as long as it's interesting.) l, f, WHAT?
