Description
This is not a big northern snowy owl, which can eat a whole rabbit or duck for a meal and defend its nest against a fox. This is a little misfit in Florida. Meet Luna, a leucistic white Eastern screech owl being cared for by the Peace River Wildlife Center. Luna "works" as an ambassador for the center and does lots of photo ops. In the wild, she would stick out like a beacon trying to hunt at night or hide in a hollow in a tree trunk, as the species is meant to do.
In leucistic birds, affected plumage lacks melanin pigment; the cells responsible for melanin production are absent. This results in a white feathers, unless the normal plumage colour also comprises carotenoids (e.g. yellows), which remain unaffected by the condition. Although leucism is inherited, the white colouration can vary between adults and their young, and can skip generations if leucistic genes are recessive. The reduction of pigment in leucistic birds causes feathers to weaken and be prone to wear. In some cases this hinders flight, which, in addition to leucistic birds being more conspicuous, can heighten risk of predation. Sadly, too, leucistic birds might not be recognised or accepted by a potential mate. Lonely is the hunter!?

Luna is quite a pretty bird. I'm glad shes being taken care of at the Peace River Wildlife Center but I have to ask, what about the other kinds of owl that are naturally white?
Barbie Corbett-Newmin replied:
Luna is little and an anomaly for her breed. The snowy, owl, which is not purely white is one of the larger owls.
Laurie Search
Aww, poor little baby!! So I guess they'll keep her in their care forever? I hope she's not lonely! That's so sad that she may not be accepted or recognized by a potential mate!!! Well, she's absolutely beautiful and looks like such a sweetheart!!! :)))vf

Yes, I think she is in captivity forever because of this condition. Thanks for your visit and support, and lovely caring comment!
