Description
Pretty pastel petals! Beautiful hydrangeas bloom from mid-spring through the late summer or early fall. These blossomed for my May birthday and were given a wee bit of a watercolor treatment. Hydrangea or hortensia, is a genus of 70–75 species of flowering plants native to Asia and the Americas. There is a wonderful diversity in Korea, China, and Japan. ‘ First discovered in Japan, the name hydrangea comes from the Greek "hydor," meaning water, and "angos," meaning jar or vessel. This roughly translates to "water barrel," referring to the hydrangea's need for plenty of water and its cup-shaped flower. The earlier name, Hortensia, is a Latinised version of the French given name Hortense, after French clockmaker Jean-André Lepaute’s wife. Most are shrubs but some are small trees. The flowers range from blue to pink depending on the acidity of the soil. Adding rusty nails or other metal or organic materials such as coffee grounds, citrus peel or eggshells are techniques to increase acidity and turn hydrangea flowers blue.
The lacy, star-shaped flowers are packed closely together in a pompom shape. There is debate over the hydrangea's symbolism. Some use it to say thank you. Some connect it to vanity and boastfulness, perhaps because of its abundant petals and lavish, round shape resulting in few seeds. Others say a bouquet of hydrangeas expresses the giver's gratefulness for the recipient's understanding. And some suggest it represents anything that's sincerely heartfelt. There is a consensus that this is the 4th wedding anniversary flower!

Hydrangea's are absolutely one of my favorite flowers. I have several bushed and they are beginning to leaf. In a few months, they will be beautiful! Promoting this in The 200 Club. FLFB
