Under the Sicilian sun this weathered green door in Matera shows signs of age and use. There may be an occupied cave dwelling behind it. Matera, Italy, is a southern city in the Basilicata region. The capital of the province of Matera, its original settlement began in two canyons carved by the Gravina River. The lower area, the Sassi di Matera, is a complex of ancient cave dwellings carved into the ancient river canyon. The expanded caverns are still in use as homes, shops, museums, restaurants, etc. The oldest city in Italy and Europe, Matera is a UNESCO World Heritage city and was the European Capital of Culture in 2019.
