Mixed Media - Digitally Altered Original Marbled Paper
Description
This digital "batik" version of a paper marbling I created is my husband's favorite mask pattern. He gets lots of compliments.
Marbled papers were popular in the 1700s and 1800s; especially as end papers of friendship albums and other books. In the 15th century the method of floating colors on the surface of mucilaginous sizing is thought to have emerged in Central Asia.
Paper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, making patterns similar to smooth marble or stone. The patterns result from floating color on plain water or a viscous solution known as size, and then carefully transferring it to an absorbent paper or fabric. For centuries, people have applied marbled materials to a variety of surfaces. It is often employed as a surface for calligraphy, and book covers and endpapers in bookbinding and stationery. Each print is a unique monotype and it is fun to do!!
