These Inca structures atop Machu Picchu in Peru were built to echo the outlines of the sacred mountains in the background mists. Machu Picchu, the capstone of the Inca civilization, was built app. 1460-1470 A.D. by Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui between two mountains, Machu Picchu (Old Peak) and Hoaynaw (New Peak) overlooking the Urubamba River Canyon about forty-three miles northwest of Cuzco. Machu Picchu was abandoned by the natives because they feared an attack. This attack never came because no one could find it until it was in ruins already. A shame, they even had running water in the king's room! The official "discovery" was July 24, 1911.
One of the few pre-Columbian ruins found nearly intact, Machu Picchu was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983.
