Has it been a tough day of feeding baby? Judging by the ruffled feathers, perhaps yes! Or maybe the critter in his beak is bothering him? Another possibility is that the hatchling pecked him in the chest, which I saw happen once before, though he didn't ruffle up on that occasion. Maybe just hot or maybe the bird version of a bad hair day!? Both parents have been frenetically bringing in food and taking out the trash. Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Melanerpes carolinus, are medium-sized aves of the family Picidae. These pale, medium-sized birds are found in the Southeastern USA. The strikingly barred backs and gleaming red caps of these birds and the orange around the bill are a lovely sight. The male has a bright red cap all the way to the bill, while his lady has a grey head in front of the red area, also with a touch of orange accenting her black beak. Despite the name, the reddish orange on the belly is hardly evident in this pose.
