A shell or seashell is a hard, protective outer layer created by a marine animal, its exoskeleton or body armor. Empty seashells wash up on beaches after the animal has died and the soft parts have been eaten by another animal or have rotted out. Most shells found on beaches are the shells of marine mollusks, since these shells endure better than other seashells.
