The Kallison's Western Wear cowboy may be near the end of the trail, but he still stands holding his saddle in urban San Antonio, Texas. The store is closed and the street is near the nitty gritty and the renewal. But what a long ride! Since 1899! Preserved for your memories and walls in dusty trail sepia!
Nathan Kallison was born in 1873, in Ladyzhinka, Russia. He escaped to America in 1890 and began working as a harness maker in Chicago, learning English and American history at the Jewish Training School. In 1893, Nathan Kallison opened his own harness shop.
In 1896, the Kallison family became naturalized American citizens.
Three years later, they moved to San Antonio, Texas, where Nathan opened his harness shop at 124 S. Flores Street. This was their home and became a successful leather business, which expanded in1908, to include ranching supplies and general merchandise. It became the leading farm and ranch store in south Texas. Mr. Kallison became a leading rancher also. He died in 1944.
