In the 15th century the method of floating colors on the surface of mucilaginous sizing is thought to have emerged in Central Asia.
Paper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, which produces patterns similar to smooth marble or stone. The patterns result from floating color on plain water or a viscous solution known as size, and then carefully transferring it to an absorbent paper or fabric. For centuries, people have applied marbled materials to a variety of surfaces.
