Here is a digital alteration to one of my paper marblings to give it a softer, more batik fabric look, suitable for a textile pattern, greeting card or abstract decor art.
Marbled papers were especially popular in the 1700s and 1800s; notable uses were end papers of friendship albums. In the 15th century the method of floating colors on the surface of mucilaginous sizing is thought to have emerged in Central Asia.
Paper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, which produces patterns similar to smooth marble or stone. The patterns result from floating color on plain water or a viscous solution known as size, and then carefully transferring it to an absorbent paper or fabric. For centuries, people have applied marbled materials to a variety of surfaces. It is often employed as a surface for calligraphy, and especially book covers and endpapers in bookbinding and stationery. Part of its appeal is that each print is a unique monotype.
