Union Made. Did the union make the man or did the man make the union? Walter Philip Reuther was born in Wheeling, West Virginia on September 1, 1907. His father was a socialist brewery worker from Germany. Reuther joined the Ford Motor Company in 1927 as a tool and die maker. He was laid off in 1932 during the Great Depression. His Ford employment record shows that he quit voluntarily, but Reuther claimed he was fired for his socialist activities. In 1936 he became president of United Automobile Workers United Automobile Workers Local 174 (with 100 members), which on paper had responsibility for 100,000 auto workers on the west side of Detroit, Michigan. Reuther led several strikes and in 1937 and 1940 was hospitalized after being beaten by strike-breakers. He survived two assassination attempts, and his right hand was permanently crippled in an attack on April 20, 1948. By 1949 he had become a leading liberal and supporter of the New Deal coalition, working to strengthen the labor union movement, raise wages, and give union leaders a greater voice in state and national Democratic party politics. He was a prominent American labor union leader, making the United Automobile Workers (UAW) a major force in the auto industry and the Democratic Party and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) in the mid 20th century. During the 1960s he was a major supporter of the civil rights movement. Mr. Reuther died May 9, 1970.

Ford Motor Company￿s Model A was the second success for Ford after its predecessor, the Model T. First sold in 1927, it replaced the venerable Model T, which had been produced for 18 years. Model A was available in four standard colors. By July, 1929, two million Model As had sold, In March 1930, nine body styles were available. Model A production ended in March, 1932.
