Union Made. Did the union make the man or did the man make the union? Walter Philip Reuther was born in Wheeling, West Virginia on September 1, 1907. His father was a socialist brewery worker from Germany. Reuther joined the Ford Motor Company in 1927 as a tool and die maker. He was laid off in 1932 during the Great Depression. His Ford employment record shows that he quit voluntarily, but Reuther claimed he was fired for his socialist activities. In 1936 he became president of United Automobile Workers United Automobile Workers Local 174 (with 100 members), which on paper had responsibility for 100,000 auto workers on the west side of Detroit, Michigan. Reuther led several strikes and in 1937 and 1940 was hospitalized after being beaten by strike-breakers. He survived two assassination attempts, and his right hand was permanently crippled in an attack on April 20, 1948.
