Description

Three Spouts to the Wind is a spittin' image showing three statuette heads or bas-relief faces spouting water into a basin. Decorated with ceramic tile and topped by decorative urns, this is one of many lovely spots in Balboa Park in San Diego, California. Balboa Park, named for Spanish maritime explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa, is one of the oldest and best parks in the United States.
The title is a play on an old sailing term: The 'sheet' in the phrase is nautical for rope which controls the trim of sail. If a sheet is loose, the sail flogs and doesn't properly drive the ship. Having several sheets loose "to the wind" can cause a ship to wallow drunkenly. "Three sheets" is "high" on a scale of drunkenness. "One sheet" means slightly tipsy or drunk and "four sheets" is unconscious.
