Guinea pig is a special, festive dish in Peru which tastes a bit gamy. The locals call it cuy. Some say it tastes a little bit like oily grey meat duck. It certainly doesn't feed very many people! There is a rumor of a digestive symptom known as Guinea Pigs' revenge! Peruvian oil paintings of the Last Supper often show guinea pig as the main dish. Growing guinea pigs is a cottage industry; high thresholds allow them to be kept in the living area. One can easily find street corner vendors selling fresh grasses and greens to feed them.

I am a vegetarian so didn't try the cuy when I visited Peru (although my friends did!). In one village we visited, there was an adorable, person-sized guinea pig statue standing on it's hind legs with festive clothing and a happy expression. Right across the street, vendors were serving guinea pig roasted on sticks. It was quite an unusual juxtaposition!
