Description
Cinchillas are adorable furry little rodents in the Andes Mountains of northern Chile and Peru. They are named after the Peruvian Chincha people and were once so prized for their luxuriously soft fur that they were hunted nearly to extinction and are still critically endangered in the wild. This fur keeps them warm in high altitudes. They are related to guinea pigs and porcupines, but resemble rabbits. They have big black eyes and each hair ends in a black tip. These herbivores live in rocky, mountainous areas from 9,800 to 16,400 feet (3,000 to 5,000 meters) in elevation and den in rock crevices and holes. I was lucky to spot this Chinchilla lanigera against the backdrop of Inca stone walls in Machu Picchu, Peru, because they are normally nocturnal, living in colonies or herds, often in underground tunnels. Cinchillidae which descended from a few imported to the US are not uncommon as pets, but need special bathing facilities...volcanic ash.
