Description

Sunflowers (sunyashniki) are Ukraine’s national flower, and represent the warmth and power of the sun, worshipped by pre-Christian Slavs.
Helianthus L. (sunflower) is a genus of plants comprising about 52 species in the Asteraceae family, all of which are native to North America and provide edible seeds.
This golden flower follows the sun in Sun City, Florida, a series of varied neighborhoods comprising a gigantic retirement community near Tampa, where residents have a myriad of activities. The sunflowers were some of the few blooms left in June, so the hospitable president of the Garden Club encouraged me to return when more flowers would be blooming! Sunflowers seem happy to me! Would Seurat or Van Gogh or the impressionists be happy with this sunny interpretation?
