Description
Meet Luna, a leucistic white Eastern screech owl being cared for and acting as ambassasdor for the Peace River Wildlife Center in Punta Gorda, Florida. Little Luna would stick out like a beacon trying to hunt at night or hide in a hollow in a tree trunk, as the species is meant to do.
In leucistic birds, affected plumage lacks melanin pigment; the cells responsible for melanin production are absent. This results in a white feathers, unless the normal plumage colour also comprises carotenoids (e.g. yellows), which remain unaffected by the condition. Although leucism is inherited, the white colouration can vary between adults and their young, and can skip generations if leucistic genes are recessive. The reduction of pigment in leucistic birds causes feathers to weaken and be prone to wear. In some cases this hinders flight, which, in addition to leucistic birds being more conspicuous, can heighten risk of predation. Sadly, too, leucistic birds might not be recognised or accepted by a potential mate.
Owls are birds from the order Strigiformes, about 200 species of mostly solitary and nocturnal birds of prey typified by an upright stance, a large, broad head, binocular vision, binaural hearing and feathers adapted for silent flight. Exceptions are the diurnal northern hawk-owl and the gregarious burrowing owl.
Owls hunt mostly small mammals, insects, and other birds; a few species specialize in hunting fish. They are found everywhere on earth except Antarctica and some remote islands. Owls are divided into two families: the true owls, Strigidae; and the barn owls, Tytonidae.
