Description

Cottongrass is an Irish native plant known as Bog Cotton. This shiny, cottony plant of the family Cypera thrives on damp peaty ground. Its leaves, often red or brown tinged, arise from the base of the plant. Its tiny little brown flowers in April and May later become an eye-catching and attractive tuft. The little seeds are white, fluffy, downy. They quiver and shake in the wind to dispersal seedlings. This fluff was used in Ireland to stuff pillows and mattresses. This shot was taken by travel photographer Barbie Corbett Newmin in scenic coastal Malin Head or Cionn Mhálanna on the Inishowen Peninsula, County Donegal, Ireland, the most northerly point of the island of Ireland. Grown on the old sod! :)
