Church of the Transfiguration, built in the 18th century, 1714 to be precise, has 22 domes. These domes were explained to us as representing candle flames reaching to the heavens, NOT onions. This amazing achievement is now preserved on Kizhi, an island near the center of Lake Onega in the Republic of Karelia, Russia. Khizi is about 6 km long, and had settlements and churches since the 15th century. Some of Russia's most famous and intricate examples of wooden architecture have been transported to the island to be displayed and saved. Kizhi Island is now an open-air museum.
No nails were used in the construction of the wooden architecture of Kizhi Island. Kizhi Architectural Ensemble is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
