Description
This original travel photo of candles burning was taken in a temple in China (Tao, Shen or Buddhist, I do not know.) In Buddhism an offering of light is to symbolizes wisdom and drive away darkness; the light of wisdom dispels the darkness of ignorance. Other cultures light candles, too. When a person wishes to meditate on a thought or idea but lacks the ability to form the appropriate words, lighting a candle is a traditional way to show intensity of thoughts and feelings. Groups of people light candles to show support for causes. Lighting a candle in memory of a lost loved one is a long standing tradition. This allows the candle lighter a time to reflect on the deceased, or pray or meditate on their relationship with the loved one.
In many Christian churches, both Catholic and Protestant, lighting a candle while praying is customary.
