Description
This red dragonfly looks pretty, airy, delicate and feminine. But this redhead on the reed may be a neon Skimmer male - Libellula croceipennis or a Crocothemis servilia. Males of these species are aggressive in defending territory. They prefer water habitats and will "buzz" other male dragonflies near their preferred perches (mostly the water iris and pickerelweed.) Their brilliant neon-red color seems to glow in the shadows. Odonata is an order of carnivorous insects encompassing dragonflies (Anisoptera/Epiprocta) and damselflies (Zygoptera). They are totally predatory; not ONE is a vegetarian!
